Vulpix appear to be based on the Japanese legend of the kitsune, fox-like creatures with many tails who were said to spit fire from their mouths, create illusions, and have especially long life spans. Rather than dying, these creatures would take on a spirit form and continue to roam the earth. This may be why the Flame-type Vulpix and their evolution can learn Spirit-type attacks. Vulpix begin life with only one snow-white tail that splits as they grow older. They have a bright flame inside them that never goes out, which gives them their elemental powers. They often control fire balls from their mouths, releasing the flame so that their bodies do not overheat. Vulpix are very friendly and are quite prone to being spoiled by admirers of their cute and mystical appearance. This admiration appears to extend beyond just humans, for Vulpix will often feign injury to escape predators. They have brown fur with darker brown paws and white bellies, and their curly manes and tails are orange. Their eyes are amber and are pupil-less.
